Nyaruguru: Residents tipped on community policing

Residents of Nyabimata Sector in Nyaruguru District have been called upon to strengthen community policing measures to effectively combat crimes that still exist in their communities.

The call was made on February 12, by the mayor of Nyaruguru, Francois Habitegeko while addressing over 1800 residents of Nyabimata.

A community security meeting was also attended by the acting District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Janvier Mazimpaka.

The community meeting was convinned to discuss human security issues in the sector and to draw collective measures against identified challenges.

Among the crimes still prevalent in the sector include illicit drugs, and domestic and gender based violence.

Mayor Habitegeko emphasized on supporting and strengthening night patrols and easy information flow on any suspected wrongdoer.

He, however, thanked them for their responsiveness in fighting and preventing crimes, but added that "sustainable security necessitates sustainable measures."

"The government is investing more in schools, hospitals, roads and rural electrification, among others. All these are meant to ensure that every Rwandan child acquires education, to guarantee healthy living and support community development, but security paves way for realising this agenda," Habitegeko told the residents.

He urged them to put much emphasis on protecting their children from illicit drugs by reporting dealers, ensure proper feeding to fight and prevent malnutrition and desist from domestic conflicts.

The DPC on his part, commended them for reporting suspected criminals like drug dealers, thieves and families experiencing internal conflicts, which are addressed before they turn violent.

He also called for timely information sharing on people they suspect to be engaged in criminal acts so as to be arrested and to further improve security
