Nyarugenge: Vehicle intercepted transporting illicit brew

A vehicle registration number RAA 512D, Toyota Hiace type was intercepted on April 25 in Nyarugenge District while transporting locally made illicit gin.

The driver of the impounded vehicle identified as Mazimpaka Epaphrodite was also taken into custody

“The vehicle was intercepted at Giti k’Inyoni in Kigali Sector loaded with jerrycans of locally made illicit brew, and it was impounded to Kigali station, where the suspect is also detained,” Senior Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said.

Article 594 of the Rwandan penal code, stipulates that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of between Rwf500,000 to Rwf5 million.

“We have since established that the driver and the alleged owner had transported the substances from Kamonyi was going to sell them in Kigali sector, but Police received information and he was arrested and substances poured before delivering them to other dealers,” SSP Hitayezu added.

The exercise to dispose of the substances was also witnessed by hundreds of residents, who were urged to make it one of their top prioritizes to fight illicit drugs by reporting dealers.
