Students of Group Scoraire Kimisagara in Nyarugenge District have vowed to stand up against human trafficking and drug abuse.
The students made the vow on September 17, during a one day meeting with members of Rwanda National Police.
The meeting which took place at the school premises aimed at sensitizing the students on the vices and as result draw collective mechanisms to fight and prevent it.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Jean Claude Kabanda, the head of Training and Sensitization in RNP- Community Policing, briefed the students as well as the school staff, on the dangers, effects of human trafficking and drug abuse.
Kabanda urged them to refrain from the vices and instead become partners in the campaigns to prevent them by mainly sharing timely information with security organs about those involved.
“Drug abuse, if no preventive mechanism in place to address it, may lead to poor performance hence prompting to school drop-outs to drug addicts,” observed Kabanda, emphasizing the need by students to distance from the substance and concentrate on studies.
CIP Kabanda further recounted that; drug abuse may also lead to other crimes such as theft, rape and assault.
He also urged the students especially girls to desist people who may offer to provide them with good jobs and education in foreign countries. “These are criminals and their intention is always to expose you to commercial sexual purposes and slavery,” noted Kabanda urging the students to play a primary role to fight the vice.
During the meeting, Students expressed keen commitment to fight the vices by forming up ant-crime clubs and importantly partner security organs through information sharing.
Jeanine Mukaneza, the school head teacher lauded RNP’s continued efforts to fight drug abuse and other crimes in schools and other parts of the country.
She asked the students to play a key role in the fight against human trafficking and drug abuse by sharing information with security organs and local authorities to ensure that those involved are arrested.
