The Mayor of Nyarugenge District, Solange Mukasonga has appealed to residents to play an active role in crime prevention and community development.

Mukasonga made during a meeting with sector executive the call on October 28 in Nyarugenge sector during a meeting with area residents.

The meeting was also attended by the District Police Commander Senior Supt. Edward Kayitare, sector executive secretaries, officials from the judicial sector and area residents.

Mukasonga commended the existing partnership between security, local leaders and residents but added that there is need to fill gaps that still exist to effectively prevent crimes andshe considered as key to preventing the likely crimes and arrest of culprits.

She urged the sector Executive Secretaries to tighten night patrols in their areas as one of the ways to curtail crimes in the entity.

The District Police Commander (DPC), Senior Supt.(SSP),Edward Kayitare, blamed drugs including illegal brew and cannabis like Kanyanga, Blue Sky, Chief Waragi and Suzi for fueling to other crimes, including,theft,assault,gender and domestic related crimes.

He urged the local authorities to map-out areas affected by drug abuse, identify and report those involved to effectively fight associated crimes including theft.
