Nyarugenge residents strengthen crime prevention campaign

Residents of Nyarugenge District have moved to protect their communities against crime by partnering with Rwanda National Police through provision of timely information necessary to prevent and solve crimes, as well as to track down criminals.

They made the pledge on May 28, while they welcomed the Mobile Police Station Vehicle that toured the district with the intention to record reports and complaints.

The Mobile Police Station Vehicle was introduced last year to extend police services to citizens living or working in places far away from Police stations.

In Nyarugenge, the vehicle packed in Biryogo Cell, Nyarugenge Sector and hundreds of residents turned up to make their claims to Police, most of which centered around land wrangles, gender-based-violence and family misunderstandings.

The Executive Secretary of Nyarugenge Sector, Charles Vuguziga, commended Police for endeavoring to reach out to every citizen and called upon residents in the area to fulfill their obligation by not collaborating with criminals but rather working with police through the provision of timely information.

“Police has clearly indicated that they are willing to get close to the people and work with them to solve their challenges in society. Therefore, we as residents have a commitment to play our part in protecting the safety in our country by abiding by the law and by partnering with law enforcers whenever we are needed to,” he said.

The Commissioner for CID, Assistant Commissioner of Police Theos Badege, urged residents to always reach out to police whenever they are faced with challenges related to safety and security, and reminded them to particularly watch out for criminal gangs and individuals responsible for distributing narcotics that fuel crime in communities.

“Working together with will send out a strong message to any criminal out there that they cannot commit a crime and forever elude justice. Through community policing, we can ensure that crimes are prevented or solved in time for purposes of serving timely efficient justice,” he said.

RNP currently has three Mobile Station Vehicles that cover all remote areas which are in need of police services.
