Residents of Kanyinya sector in Nyarugenge district met at Nzove cell on July 14 and agreed to jointly identify individuals involved in making and trafficking illicit drugs in the area as an effective way of breaking the supply chain.
This, they believe, will also supplement efforts by security organs to combat the vice in the country by apprehending all those dealing and consuming such illegal drugs.
They also say this will help the Police’s efforts against crimes, most of which are said to be fueled by drug abuse.
Other resolutions of their community meeting include providing timely information to security organs on any likely security threat in their localities through community-based policing.
The meeting was also attended by Johnson Karangwa, the sector executive secretary and Inspector of Police IP Marie Goreth Umutesi, Mageragere Police station commander.
IP Umutesi identified cannabis, illicit liquor like kanyanga and chief waragi, locally made brew such as muriture and ibikwangari as major illicit drugs in the country.
He urged them to fight them adding that they have been the main cause of domestic violence, fighting and theft.
Karangwa also appealed to the residents to strive to ensure that the vice is kicked out of the sector by cooperating with security organs giving them information on people dealing in the vice to further prevent crimes from happening.
During the event, 500 litres of muriture and ten kilogrammes of cannabis seized in the sector were also destroyed.
