NYARUGENGE: Residents foil attempted house burglary

A 53-year old man was arrested in Rwintare village, Gasharu cell of Nyamirambo sector in Nyarugenge District after breaking into a local hardware store.

The suspect was apprehended on Saturday, March at about 05:30a.m following credible information provided by the local residents.

"Two men had planned to rob a hardware shop located in Gasharu cell in Nyamirambo. They drilled a hole through which one entered into the shop at about 03a.m, as the other stayed outside," Superintendent of Police (SP) Sylvestre Twajamahoro, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said.

Fortune enough, he added, some local residents already had information about their criminal plan, and they worked together with the Police to foil the burglary.

"During the operation, the suspect who has remained outside managed to flee but the one who was inside was apprehended red-handed at the scene after parking some of the items," said SP Twajamahoro.

The search for his accomplice is still underway.

SP Twajamahoro thanked the residents for the spirit of neighbourhood watch to foil the burglary and to arrest one of the suspected thieves, who was handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) at Rwezamenyo station.

Article 166 of law determining offences and penalties in general states that; any person convicted of theft is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than one (1) year and not more than two (2) years and a fine of not less than Frw1 million and not more than Frw2 million, community service in a period of six (6) months or only one of these penalties.

In article 167, the penalty for theft doubles if the offender committed the crime through burglary, climbing or possession of keys other than the owner; the theft is carried out during the night or by more than one (1) person.
