Nyarugenge: Prosecution imposter arrested

The anti-corruption unit of Rwanda National Police has arrested a 37-year-old man for allegedly passing off as prosecutors police in Nyarugenge have said.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Gorette Umutesi the central region police spokesperson confirmed that Octave Munyemana was arrested on April 16, and handed over to Rwanda investigation bureau to be further investigated for alleged extortion from unwitting members of the public through making false representations that he was a prosecutor.

She said the suspect allegedly approached three people and falsely informed them that he had seen their names identified as people to be soon arrested and prosecuted for either confiscating or intermeddling with properties of people indicted for genocide and victims.

“The Imposter stated that he would personally remove them from any criminal liability” said CIP Umutesi.


She further explained that the imposter reportedly indicated that he would prefer to   meet them in Kigali and further discuss the matter where the latter met and offered him Rwf 50.000 from an initial Rwf 300.000

Suspecting foil play the would-be victims informed anti-corruption police who waylaid the in Muhima sector.

The suspect was caught-red-handed with the money.

Under Rwandan law, all persons arrested for a criminal offense are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
