A joint operation against psychotropic substances conducted Tuesday in Kigali Sector, Nyarugenge District arrested six people, who were at the time found distilling illicit brew.
About 900 litres of illicit drinks were seized from the suspects during the Tuesday night operation.
Police identified those arrested as Charlotte Nyirahabimana, 32, Jean Marie Vienney Nizeyimana, Marie Ange Murayire, 34; Frank Sibomana, 37, Freddy Mbarubukeye, 32, and Jean Ntirushwa, 38.
Senior Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said that the operation was specifically meant to arrest people operating illegal distilleries or selling harmful substances.
“The suspects were paraded before the residents of Gahombo Village where the substances were disposed of, as a warning that these are harmful and unlawful acts, which will not be tolerated,” SSP Hitayezu said.
It is said that the illicit brew in made out of concoction of an assortment of chemical substances including urea fertilizers, sugar, dissolved bricks, wheat and yellow bananas among others.
“Anyone investing in such a business is poisoning people, which won’t be entertained; you are also wasting your money since when such substances are seized they are destroyed.”
