A Police crackdown conducted in Nyarugenge District, on Wednesday, apprehended two people suspected to be heading a ring of thieves and drug dealers.
They were arrested in Inyambo Village of Agatare Cell in Nyarugenge Sector where quantities of cannabis and stolen items were recovered.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said that the “operation was planned and targeted the very suspects whose names and their whereabouts was revealed through information sharing.”
Among the recovered items include 142 academic certificates for students of Baptiste Buberuka School located in Musanze District as well as the school’s banking tools including cheque books, among others.
The transcripts for last year’s Senior Three and Six students and the banking tools were in the bag which was stolen last week after thieves broke into the car of the school director where it was parked at Car Wash.
The director had just collected the academic transcripts from Rwanda Education Board (REB).
“On October 31, based on credible information, Police in Nyarugenge raided the home of one Gatarayiha Salimu alias Sililo, 35, located in Inyambo Village. Gatarayiha was found with another man identified as Idi Macumi, 36. They were at the time smoking cannabis,” said CIP Kayigi.
“During the search of the house, they recovered quantities of cannabis and the bag containing academic diplomas and other items which were reportedly stolen last week,” he added.
The recovered documents have since been returned to the school, he said.
“These people are part of the group of thieves and drug dealers. Some of the members of this rings, who are still at large, are known and an operation to locate and arrest them continues,” Kayigi said.
