A Police crackdown on people circulating fake currencies led to the arrest of one Pascal Sindikubwabo, 40, in Nyarugenge District on September 27 with counterfeit notes amounting to 2400 Euros.
Sindikubwabo was apprehended red-handed in Inyarurembo Village of Kiyovu Cell in Nyarugenge Sector with 48 notes in the denomination of 50 Euros, Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said.
“Police had received information from some people on Sindikubwabo criminal acts, officers trailed and arrested him in the process circulating the forged currency notes,” said Supt. Hitayezu.
He warned that operations with continue to arrest anyone involved in this criminal business. He further urged the business community and public in general, to be vigilant not to fall prey, and to always inform the police whenever they see anyone with counterfeit notes.
Small business enterprises like retail shops, mobile banking agents and airtime vendors are among the majority targeted.
Supt. Hitayezu noted that counterfeit currencies related crimes are “isolated and very few” but added that “each case has the harm it causes to business growth, which everyone shouldn’t allow.”
Previously, the central bank indicated that the threat of counterfeiting of currencies within Rwanda remains as low as 0.001% of currencies in circulation.
Under article 603 of the penal code circulating counterfeited currencies is punishable by a jail sentence of up to three years.
