Nyarugenge: Kung-fu clubs up against drugs

At least four Kung-fu clubs in Nyarugenge District, on October 28, held a campaign to further raise awareness against illicit drugs.

The campaign held in Rwampara, Nyarugenge Sector also brought together students was characterized with a walk against drugs, musical show and Kung-fu tournament dedicated to raising awareness against psychotropic substances.

The clubs are MANTIS Kung-fu, Juma, African Empire and Sport Friends.

It was held under the theme: The role of sports in fighting drugs and gender based violence towards sustainable development.

The event was also attended by Police, local leaders and youth coordinator in Nyarugenge, Sylvain Rutabigwa.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Goreth Umutesi, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) for Nyarugenge thanked the Kung-fu clubs for using their talent to save the fellow young generation that are ravaged by drugs.

“By working together in raising awareness, sharing information on dealers and ensuring that addicts are rehabilitated, we will win the fight against the vice,” CIP Umutesi said.

She observed that the youth have the power to enforce change and urged them to maintain the momentum to give no room for drug dealers.

Zhang Xian, the Managing Director of MANTIS club thanked the Government of Rwanda for empowering and supporting the youth.

He said that they opened the kung-fu club as means to develop talents of the young people and to prevent them from indulging in lawlessness including abusing or dealing in narcotic drugs.

Zhang noted that the martial art teaches respect, patience and hard work and urged the youth not to waste their talents and the future to drugs.

The Kung-fu clubs also resolved to form anti-drugs clubs through which they will continue to discuss and raise awareness against the vice.
