Nyarugenge: Gitega commit to improve security, hygiene

Villages, schools and cooperatives in Gitega Sector of Nyarugenge District have signed the performance contract aimed at further making the City of Kigali ‘green, clean and safe.’

The contract entered on January 28 is in line with the ongoing security and hygiene campaign jointly conducted by Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the City of Kigali, which is currently in its second phase of the seventh edition.

The event in Gitega was presided over by the vice mayor of Nyarugenge in charge of Social Affairs, Jean Marie Bagabo alongside the District Police Commander, Supt. Thomas Twahirwa.

The vice mayor reiterated to importance of the joint campaign to make the city clean and safe for sustainable security and health of the people.

He reminded village chiefs and cell executive secretaries not to work under watch but to love and be defined by their tasks.

“Security, sanitation and hygiene are important factors in development, and it’s a duty that falls in everyone’s hands as leaders and the people under your leadership. The performance contract is just a formality of what you are supposed to be doing,” Bagabo said.

“We call upon the public to take this campaign up to make their homes, communities and the whole city clean, green and safe for all, and that lies in your responsibilities to ensure that this is explained to them and understand well what they should do,” he added.

The DPC said that fast development depends of security, which is observed through a proactive approach and timely information sharing with security organs on anything illegal or criminal.

The security and hygiene campaign also seeks to build stronger and functioning community policing committees, community night patrols, fight drug abuse, domestic violence; noise pollution, sale of alcoholic drinks to minors, fire outbreak, public order management and promote road security.
