Nyarugenge: Commercial motorcyclists reminded on road safety standards

Commercial motorcyclists in Nyarugenge District have been called upon to keep themselves safe by respecting traffic rules and regulations as means to also prevent fatal accidents.

While addressing close to 100 commercial motorcyclists in Kimisagara, recently, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Nyarugenge, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Goreth Umutesi, reminded them that "security on the road largely depend on individual behavior and responsibility."

"Accidents affects family and the country's economic progress; when children lose their dependant; when you spend your money on hospital bills or lifetime injuries rather than other development activities or when people's property are destroyed," the DCLO said.

CIP Umutesi also emphasized the need for strong cooperation against crimes, citing drug trafficking and abuse as one major crimes that requires immediate attention and real time information sharing.

Motorcyclists are said to be one of the groups used or involved in trafficking of narcotic drugs.

The executive secretary of Kimisagara Sector, Charles Havuguziga, also urged motorcyclists to be part of the government community development activities like umuganda and support community policing initiatives like Irondo, neighborhood watch and timely information sharing.

Reverien Mbarushimana, the head of Icyizere motorcycle cooperative, observed that road safety serves interest of all road users, particularly motorcyclists.

He urged members to ensure body hygiene.
