The District Police Commander of Nyanza, Supt. Janvier Ntakirutimana urged students of Lycée de Nyanza located in Mukigo sector not to indulge in abusing illicit drugs, which is both criminal and dangerous to their health.
Supt Ntakirutimana was at the schools to educate students about the side effects of illicit drugs and to urge them to join efforts to eradicate drug related crimes.
The DPC also appealed to parents and young people to talk openly about the dangers of abusing drugs and excessive drinking.
While addressing the students on October 25, Supt. Ntakirutimana said: “drugs abuse and excessive alcohol consumption is potentially harmful to your life and an obstacle to your future. The future of this national will depend on the generation molded today,” the DPC said.
“You are the future of Rwanda and you should not let your country down. Study hard and have the opportunity of contributing significantly to the development of your country,” he said
He particularly appealed to teachers to always guide the children, educate them on dangers of drugs and incorporate it in their debates and other school disciplines.
“Your parents are striving to give you a better future through education, and indulging in abusing drugs can ruin that dream.”
He also enlightened them on laws against trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs.
Trafficking and abusing drugs is criminalized under articles 593 to 598 of the penal code.
