Police in Nyanza District is holding a man identified as Nyandwi Mwangaguhaba, 39, for stealing about Rwf1.5 million.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Bonaventure Karekezi, the Southern region Police spokesperson, confirmed that on September 7, Nyandwi ambushed one of the employees of Gahaheza Savings and Credit Cooperative (Sacco) and snatched the money from him.
"The victim; Meshach Rimenyurifite, is a debt collector for the Sacco branch; he was at the time coming back from collecting the money from debtors when he was ambushed by Nyandwi in Nyabubare Village, Mushirarungu Cell, Rwabicuma Sector and took the money," CIP Karekezi said.
"The victim was not harmed," he said.
"However, with the help of the residents, the suspect was identified and arrested, all the money recovered and returned to the Sacco," he explained.
At the time of his arrest, the spokesperson said, the suspect was found with a knife, red pepper, rope and an iron rode.
"Nyandwi is suspected to have been involved in a similar theft also in Nyanza."
The victim, Rimenyurifite thanked the Police and residents for the quick intervention.
"There was quick intervention from the residents when I raised an alarm even before the police arrived.
That was a true spirit of community policing," Rimenyurifite said.
