Nyanza: Residential house found filled with trees cut illegally

Police in Nyanza District, on November 15 recovered a house in Mbuye cell, Kibirizi sector filled with stumps of a local tree called kabaruka, cut illegally.

The house belongs to one Egide Mungarakarama.

Five people said to be connected to this environmental crime have so far been arrested and currently detained at Busoro Police station as investigations continue.

"Illegal tree cutting contributes to environment degradation, which, in one way or another, has  ill-effects on people’s health and the economy in general,” Police spokesperson for the Southern Province, Chief Supt. Hubert Gashagaza, said.

He reminded that for anyone to cut or transport trees from one area to another, has to seek authorisation from local leaders in the area.

He lauded the public for providing Police with timely information that led to the arrest of the suspects and seizure of the stumps.

CSP Gashagaza called upon the public to avert such acts and report in time those involved.
