Nyanza: Police intercept 1000 litres of illicit gin

Police in Nyanza district has cautioned area residents against making and selling illicit brew.

The warning follows the seizure of 1, 000 litres of a locally made brew called Ibikwangari, made out of sorghum, sugar and water, on Sunday.

The illicit brew was recovered in a house of one Martha Mukashema in Kiruri cell of Mukingo sector.

The illegal brew was also destroyed in presence of hundreds of area residents and students in particular.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) David Nkundimana, the District Police Commander (DPC) said they received information from members of the public in Kiruri about Mukashema’s illegal act.

“We also found there containers including jerrycans and drums the suspect was using the make the illicit brew,” CIP Nkundimana said.

He lauded area residents for their timely information that led to the seizure of the liquids.

“Ibikwangari like other brew and gin, are harmful to people’s health and we urge everyone to join us to fight it,” he noted.

“We have arrested a number of people connected to this illegal act and the fight is still on; this campaign will be a success if the general public make it their responsibility and refrain and report anyone involved,” he said.
