Nyanza: Police draws new measures to address school dropout

Police in Nyanza District has reached out to parent and sensitized them to ensure they keep their children in school and the risks of school drop outs.

This came after police 64 children who dropped out of school were found loitering on the streets Busasamana and Nyagisozi sectors.

Also, Police in partnership with the local government officials identified parents whose children were seen   idle and riotous especially in trading centers and rural markets.

According to the Busasamana police station commander, Inspector of police (IP) Athanase Niyonagira the intention was to also establish the reason as to why children drop out of schools yet education is free in public primary schools.

“With access to free education, it’s unacceptable for a child to drop out of school,” he said.

He observed that some children as young as ten were found carrying merchandise to markets unaccompanied while others were being guided by parents to the market on a school day.

Head teachers were asked to report any missing child to local leaders while local leaders were asked to hold parents of absentee pupils responsible.
