Nyamasheke: Students sensitized on dangers of substance use

Police have appealed to students of Kiziba secondary school in Nyamasheke District to desist from any temptations that may lure them into abusing drugs and other substances, which will ruin their health and future.

Inspector of Police (IP) Philippe Abizera, the District Community Liaisons Officer (DCLO) of Nyamasheke, while addressing over 300 students on Tuesday, told them that drug abuse is one of the major issues affecting youth development and education in particular as some of them end up dropping out of school.

“Don’t be wasted, being addictive starts with tasting; one time thing might a point of no return,” IP Abizera told the youth.

“Whoever tells you to smoke cannabis, you know that that person doesn’t with you well… he or she is poisoning you and is your enemy,” he added.

Instead, he emphasised, “when someone approaches you to sell their drugs or even when you see or suspect anyone to be selling drugs, call the Police.”

He further urged them to report their colleagues that abuse drugs so that they are rehabilitated.

Anne Marie Mukamana, one of the student leaders, thanked the Police and authorities for approaching youngsters in a bid to guide them on proper life’s paths.

She reiterated the consequences of indulging in lawlessness and indiscipline as actions that lead to the way of failure in life and not having a “purposeful life.”

Juliette Isiraguma, the headmistress of the school commended the police for their timely intervention on such social menace and reminded the students of their dreams to become responsible adults in the future.

She, therefore, urged them to stay away from drugs to achieve their ambitions and pledged the school commitment to continue educate the students on dangers of drugs.
