Nyamasheke: Students sensitized on dangers of human trafficking

Students of Nyarusange Secondary School and Mwezi Teacher Training College, both schools located in Nyarusange Sector in Nyamasheke District, were on July 22, sensitized on dangers of human trafficking and told to share information on people suspected to be involved in the vice to ensure that they are brought to book.

In his address to the students who were over 1000, While speaking to over 1,000 students, the Executive Secretary of Nyarusange Sector, Juvenal Kanyogote, urged them to avoid anyone who may lure them into malpractices intended to divert them from attaining academic aspirations and future ambitions.

“Avoid any person who may offer to take you abroad with a promise to get you jobs and education opportunities. In most cases these are people have ill intentions because once they finally take you, you are most likely end up into forced labour or made a sex slave,” said Kanyankore.

He added that; “If a stranger approaches you with such promises, immediately share information with Police and or local authorities to have them look into the matter and possibly investigate if there are suspicions of human trafficking.”

Kanyankore commended Police for its continued efforts to reach out to the youths particularly students and mobilize them to take a lead role in prevention and fighting criminal activities.

The Nyamasheke District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), Inspector of Police (IP), Phillippe Abizeye, also asked students to avoid abusing drugs, and instead join campaigns to fight the vice.

“Drug abuse is a source of other criminal activities like assault, theft, rape and defilement. Avoid engaging into drug business or consumption. Drug abuse is criminal offence that is punishable by the law. Besides being a criminal offense, drugs have diverse effects especially to students including possible school dropout,” he said.

The dialogue was also attended by the coordinator of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing in Nyamasheke District, Gerald Mfashwanayo.
