Former drug dealers and addicts in Kigoya Cell, Kanjongo Sector in Nyamasheke District have been hailed for their awareness activities and information sharing in the campaign against drug dealers.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the Western Region Police spokesperson expressed the appreciation on July 14 after a successful operation against narcotic drugs.
About 400 litres of illicit brew were seized during the operation in Karambo trading centre.
The substances were disposed of in presence of hundreds of residents.
"These psychotropic substances were seized because this group of reformed drug dealers and abusers have made it their duty to sensitize people on dangers, and through this we get information from the people on dealers and stores," CIP Gasasira said while addressing residents shortly after the destruction exercise.
The former drug dealers and abusers in Kigoya Cell formed an association called ‘Sisi Wenyewe’ with an ideal purpose to fight drug abuse through awareness, and to improve safety and security of their community.
CIP Gasasira reminded the residents that Rwanda National Police and partnership with various community policing groups will continue with operations to ensure that anyone involved in such crimes is arrested to face justice.
He further advised residents to use their money into other legal and profitable business ventures, rather than burning their money in such criminal businesses.
