Over 300 youth in Kigeme refugee camp in Nyamagabe district were on August 6 sensitized on dangers of drug abuse and urged to report other crimes in the camp like gender and domestic violence.
The event was organized by Rwanda National Police in partnership with Plan Rwanda.
Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Mugabe, Nyamagabe District Judicial Police Officer (DJPO) said the decision to sensitize the youth was taken after it was observed that some of them are involved in drug related crimes including consuming and selling cannabis.
Judith Mukeshimana from ‘Plan Rwanda’ appealed to the youth to refrain and step up against the vice, and share information with security organs regarding those involved.
“Drug abuse has negative consequences such as luring teens into sexual acts leading to unwanted pregnancies, school dropout, and theft among others,” Mukeshimana said.
“If not protected from such life-threatening substances, our youth may end up spoiled and taking part in criminal acts like theft and assault, thus threatening community security,” she added.
The youngsters commended Rwanda National Police and Plan Rwanda for the informative and educative message and requested that similar awareness be held regularly and in schools.
