Police and local leaders in Nyamagabe District engaged about 800 residents of Mugali Cell in Cyanika Sector in discussions related to proactive policing.
The meeting held on February 19, aimed at enlightening the residents on the ideology of community policing so as to strengthen the proactive concept in identifying, reporting, fighting and preventing crimes.
The District Police Commander (DPC) of Nyamagabe, Supertendent of Police (SP) Gaspard Rwegeranya told the residents that the ideology of community policing gives them powers to ensure their own security.
"Security is a wide aspect but an important factor in the wellbeing of every person and development of our country, which puts you at the forefront of ensuring the safety of your localities," Supt. Rwegeranya said.
He identified illicit drugs as one of the high impact crimes that every resident should strive to fight to save the young people, the majority victims.
The DPC also embarked on the unlawful acts of mining especially in Cyanika Sector, in some cases causing disasters and loss of lives.
He called for increased night patrols, vigilance and timely information sharing on anything or anyone that can cause insecurity.
The coltan mining concession in question is owned by Cyusa limited and touches three districts of Nyamagabe, Huye and Nyanza.
It is said that some residents use the cover of the night to go into the concession where in some cases tilt weak cliffs causing landslides.
Callixte Mudahunga, the executive Secretary of Cyanika also emphasized the need to strengthen night patrols and reporting groups engaged in illegal mining activities.
