Police in Nyamagabe District, on Monday, arrested one Sylvain Simubura, 44, for attempting to bribe a police officer with Rwf20, 000.
He was arrested in Kamegeri Sector, Kamegeri Cell trying to bribe the officer to influence the illegal release of his brother detained at Tare Police station.
Simubura’s brother identified as Damien Ndikuyeze was arrested recently in connection with theft.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaston Karagire, the District Police Commander for Nyamagabe said that after the arrest of Ndikuyeze, Simubura started calling the Tare station commander for negotiations.
“The suspect had promised to give the bribe of Rwf100, 000 for unconditional release of his brother. The officers reported the criminal attempt and Simubura was arrested red-handed offering part of the bribe amounting to Rwf20, 000,” SSP Karagire said.
He warned against such criminal tendencies and emphasized that fighting corruption should be everyone’s responsibility.
“Rwanda National Police has embraced zero tolerance to bribery and corruption. The public should take that into account and abide by the law instead of taking illegal shortcuts using monetary value or any other form of bribes," he said.
“We advise the public to avoid anything that would tempt them into either offering or receiving bribes, and encourage sharing of information on those involved to ensure that they are arrested to face the law.”
According to article 4 of the Law on Fighting Against Corruption, it is stated that any person who offers, solicits, accepts or receives, by any means, an illegal benefit for himself/herself or another person in order to render or omit a service under his or her mandate, commits an offense.
Upon conviction, the offender is liable to imprisonment for a term of more than five years but not more than seven years, with a fine of three to five times the value of the illegal benefit solicited or received.
