Nyamagabe: Driver arrested attempting to bribe police officer

Police is Nyamagabe district have arrested  Ignace Dukuzumuremyi on suspicion of attempting to bribe a police officer with Rwf 50.000 in an effort to wrongly qualify him as having passed the driver’s test – Category A-  even after he did not make efforts to do the required mandatory assessment.

It is alleged that the suspect lured the officer with the money during an exercise to test potential drivers of which he wanted to upgrade his license.

The Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayingi confirmed the arrest and said the suspect is detained Gasaka police station s investigations continue.

“His intention was to enticed the officer with the money and persuaded the officer to accept the money and approve him for passing the tests for category A   drivers permit” IP Kayingi said.

The officer rejected the bribe but instead alerted his colleagues to the suspect persuasions.

He further explained that the suspect followed the police officer to her residence located in Gasaka sector Namugari cell in the village of Kabacuzi where he insisted to bribe the officer and was arrested as he handed over the money.

IP Kayigi said that the officer demonstrated the force’s culture of zero stance to corruption and that she acted in the expected professional manner.

Article 641 of the penal code stipulates that any person who offers a gift to get any illegal service or refrain from carrying out any usual duties shall be liable to a prison term of five to seven years and a fine of twice or up to ten times the value of what they had offered as bribes.
