One Ange Muhawenimana is in police custody in Nyagatare following an attempt to bribe a police officer with Frw 90,000. The bribe was to get a friend of Muhawenimana’s released after he (friend) was arrested a few days ago for allegedly stealing cell phones in Nyagatare town.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Eastern Region Police Spokesperson confirmed the development adding that the suspect was arrested on August 17 at around mid-day. That was when she was trying to give Frw 90,000 to a police officer at Nyagatare Police Station.
Before her arrest, Muhawenimana who is said to be a resident of Kicukiro District in Kigali said she only wanted her friend Eliezel Munyehirwe released from detention.
Munyehirwe was arrested in Nyagatare on August 14, for allegedly stealing mobile phones.
Muhawenimana, the bribery suspect, is detained at Nyagatare Police Station.
CIP Kanamugire warned residents to desist from acts of bribery, issuing the reminder that Rwanda National Police has devised strong measures to arrest anyone involved in graft.
He called upon the public to stand up against this act by reporting those involved in communities to ensure that suspects are arrested and brought to book.
“Corruption has diverse effects on service delivery at various administrative levels, and this affects governance which may at some point pave room for injustices,” CIP Kanamugire emphasized.
Under article 641 of the penal code, “any person who explicitly or implicitly offers, proposes directly or indirectly a gift or any other illegal benefit to a person in charge of a service, mission or mandate or who promises it in order to render a service or to refrain from carrying out any usual duties, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of between five to seven years, and a fine of twice to ten times the value of the illegal benefit he or she offered or promised.
Rwanda National Police maintains its zero-stance to graft in partnership with other institutions like the Ombudsman Office, Transparency International and the public to combat corruption.
