Nyagatare: Vehicle intercepted trafficking contrabands

Police in Nyagatare District intercepted a pickup vehicle on March 1, which was loaded with contrabands that had been sneaked into the country.

The Toyota Hilux RAA 122I was intercepted in Bugarama, Gacundezi in Rwimiyaga Sector carrying about 65 boxes of Zebra Waragi, a gin packed in plastic bags and classified as narcotics in Rwanda.

“The vehicle was headed to Gatsibo District where it was supposed to deliver to contrabands, but it was intercepted along the way after residents alerted the Police that it was transporting illicit gin,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugure, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province, said.

“Because dealers know that they are dealing in criminal business they tend to use the cover of the night and use feeder roads. In this case, the illicit gins were loaded on the vehicle at about midnight in Matimba, but during the process, some residents saw them and called the police. That’s how the vehicle was intercepted in Rwimiyaga and found loaded with 65 boxes,” he added.

“Partnership through information sharing is an ideal tool in policing, crime prevention and bringing to justice suspected criminals,” he said, thanking residents who called the police to report the crime.
