Nyagatare: Two motorcycles impounded over drug trafficking

Police in Nyagatare District, on Friday, seized 34 boxes of contrabands that had been trafficked into the country.

The boxes of zebra waragi concealed in ten sacks were being trafficked on two motorcycles, which were also impounded to Rwimiyaga Police station.

Chief Inspector of police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region said the successful operation was informed by a tip-off from residents.

"The operation was conducted at about 5am when Police officers, acting on the information, trailed the motorcyclists to their destination in Kirebe, Rwimiyaga," CIP Kanamugire said.

On seeing Police officers, he added, the traffickers abandoned the contrabands and their motorcycles; RE 049H and RD 386V, and fled.

CIP Kanamugire warned motorcyclists against facilitating drug traffickers, but commended residents for their increased participation in fighting criminality and drug trafficking in particular.

He said contrabands such as Blue sky, chase waragi, living waragi, host waragi, coffee spirit, African gin and other locally made illicit brew are often seized in the district.

Operations, he said, have been strengthened alongside awareness campaigns to identity traffickera and to break supply chains.
