Three suspected drug traffickers have been arrested in separate Police operations conducted in Nyagatare and Gasabo districts on Tuesday.
Two of the suspects were at the time traveling by public means along Nyagatare-Kayonza highway, with quantities of cannabis concealed in their luggage.
The Eastern region Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, said that at about 7pm on Tuesday, Police received a call from one of the passengers reporting that he suspected one of the passengers to be having cannabis.
“A checkpoint was mounted Gacundezi Village of Rwimiyaga Cell in Rwimiyaga Sector, and the said vehicle arrived at about 7:30pm. Police officers didn’t know who had the drugs, so they searched every luggage. Quantities of cannabis were found in two luggage, and owners were identified and taken into custody,” CIP Kanamugire explained.
The third suspect only identified as Nyiramana, was arrested in Hanika Village of Nyamabuye Cell of Gatsata Sector, Gasabo District in possession of 2, 598 rolls of cannabis.
Meanwhile, CIP Kanamugire thanked the passenger, who called the Police.
“When you suspect anyone to be involved in unlawful or criminal acts don’t hesitate to call security organs; let us find out the truth,” he said.
On several occasions, passengers have reported their fellow passengers trafficking especially cannabis, either concealed in their luggage or wrapped around their body.
