Nyagatare: Three cyclists arrested with contrabands

An operation against commercial cyclists turned drug dealers in Nyagatare District arrested three of them, who were at the time sneaking contrabands into the country.

They were arrested red-handed in Kabeza Village, Rurenge Cell of Rukomo Sector, with various quantities of banned illicit gin, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobard Kanamugire, the spokesperson for the Eastern region, said.

“As part of the ongoing fight against narcotic drugs, Police received information from residents of Rukomo about some cyclists who had turned into drug dealers or facilitating dealers to transport their narcotics,” CIP Kanamugire said.

“We received information on Sunday that there was a group of ten cyclists were transporting sacks of contrabands like Kanyanga and zebra waragi, but during the operation others fled leaving their bicycles and illegal luggage behind; investigations have identified those who escaped, and they will be arrested to fake the law,” he added.

“The Police are relentlessly on illicit drugs; it’s a crime that has a big impact on the general security and affecting the development of the young people and fueling conflicts in families,” he said.

He thanked those who provided police with information that led to breaking the cyclists trafficking ring, and urged the general public to maintain the spirit of ownership in dealing with the scourge.
