Residents of Nyagatare District, on November 29, joined the rest of the country in a campaign to further drive out gender based violence in their community.
The campaign, which is in the framework of the ongoing 16 Days of Activism against gender violence was held in Nyarurema Cell of Gatunda Sector, where various speakers called upon men to break the patriarchal habits that still exit and challenge the gender balance norms.
While addressing the residents, the Vice mayor of Nyagatare in charge of Social Affairs, Domithilla Musabyemariya challenged women and girls of Gatunda to stand up against such violations and report any case of GBV they encounter or witness to ensure that culprits face justice.
She said that where there is peace and harmony, families prosper due to working in unison.
“We need healthy and productive families where couples plan together for the social and economic goals of their homes and community at large,” said Musabyemariya.
Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Claude Kaburabuza, the District Community Liaison Officer of Nyagatare educated the gathering on the existing laws related to violence against women and children and laws on matters of domestic violence.
He reiterated the benefits of sharing information on all incidents of violence, which help police to conduct successful investigations and bring suspects to justice.
During the same occasion, women activists against gender violence conveyed messages through drama that depict the nature and common occurrences of violence based on genders.
