Nyagatare residents commended for fighting drug trafficking

Residents Matimba Sector in Nyagatare District have been commended for their strengthened effort in breaking chains of illicit drugs supply through timely information sharing on dealers and routes.

The appreciation follows series of events where residents have called security organs on suspected drug dealers especially in Matimba, one of the mapped transit routes.

The latest case of drug traffickers was reported by residents of Kabeza in Matimba after they suspected a group of 18 cyclists to be transporting illegal goods.

“Police in Nyagatare received a call from local patrols and some residents of Kabeza in Matimba reporting a group of cyclists they suspected to be transporting illicit gin, and security organs responded immediately,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Eastern Region Police Spokesperson, said.

“They stopped all the 18 cyclists, searched their luggage they were transporting and indeed all of them had a combined 114 cartons of Zebra Waragi,” he added.

Zebra Waragi is one of the illicit gins packed in banned plastic bags.

“There is massive improvement of people and local community patrols in Nyagatare reporting suspected wrongdoers especially drug dealers, which continues to facilitate operations and bringing offenders to justice,” the spokesperson said.

He appealed to the residents to continue with the spirit of community policing to fight and prevent drug dealers, including traffickers and local retail bars.
