Nyagatare: Residents cautioned against distilling and selling illicit substance

Police and local authorities in Nyagatare District cautioned the residents against trafficking, making and selling psychotropic substances.

The warning follows separate operations in which assorted contrabands were seized from dealers, who were also arrested.

The contrabands, which were disposed of Wednesday in Rwimiyaga sector, include 1,110 litres of Kanyanga, 2,965 sachets of African Gin and 1200 bottles of Kambuca.

Others include 60 sachets of Soft Gin, five boxes of Zebra waragi, 112 litres of Umugorigori and 29kgs of cannabis.

The substances were impounded from dealers in operations conducted between July and September, this year.

The District Police Commander (DPC), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Claude Bizimana thanked the residents for the partnership and information sharing, which facilitated the arrest of dealers.

Present was also the Executive Secretary of Nyagatare, Jane Ingabire, RIB officials and hundreds of local residents.

SSP Bizimana called for strengthened cooperation to identify traffickers and local dealers to face justice.

He also pointed to how individual and family income is being misused in drugs and advised residents to venture in legal businesses.

Residents were also taken through laws that penalize traffickers and those who sell narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Anyone convicted as a major drug dealer faces between 20 years and life in prison.
