Police officers operating in Nyagatare District were on Sunday joined by members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) in the district to donate blood.

The blood donation, which followed a general sports exercise was in line with the ongoing Police Month.  

The mayor of Nyagatare, David Claudian Mushabe presided over the event held at University of Rwanda-Nyagatare Campus.

Police officers and youth volunteers donated about 27, 000 ml of blood.

Mayor Mushabe thanked those who donated blood and appealed to residents to have a "life-saving heart."

"Donating blood shouldn't be done during Police Month only; it should be a tradition to save those in need, it could be you, your relative or friend who will be in need of blood transfusion tomorrow," Mushabe told residents.

He appealed to the young people to engage in such patriotic human security activities and conduct sports to stay fit and healthy.
 
Lydie Uwera from Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) Rwamagana branch, commended the role of Rwanda National Police in supporting the national blood bank.

"Today, you have saved some people who lose a lot of blood in accidents, women who lose a lot of blood while in Labour and many other people whose health require blood transfusion," Uwera said.

Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Emmanuel Nzamurambaho, the District Political and Civic Education Officer for Nyagatare, said that donating blood is part of the RNP human security aspect to save patients who need blood.

He commended the role of the public and youth volunteers in particular in driving the ideals of community policing, and called for ownership in fighting high impact crimes like illicit drugs, gender based violence and teenage pregnancy.
