Drug trafficking and abuse are illegal and punishable under the Rwandan penal code. It is also a health hazard and tempts one into other criminal acts.
Rwanda National Police is engaged in various activities to combat this vice, which is rated high among the youth. Fight drug abuse is one of the Rwanda National Police’s priorities.
On January 22, Police in Nyagatare District intercepted a vehicle – minibus – loaded with illegal gins which include 120 cartons of zebra waragi and 100 litres of kanyanga.
The vehicle was intercepted in Karama cell of Karangazi sector along Nyagatare-Gatsibo road.
One person, a resident of Nyabweshongezi cell in Matimba sector was taken into custody in connection with the act.
The suspect, who is currently detained at Nyagatare Police Station, told Police that they were headed to Gatsibo town to deliver the illegal gins.
Police is searching for four other people connected to this illegal business.
“We acted on credible information provided to us by responsible residents of Matimba and mounted a roadblock and intercepted the vehicle loaded with the illegal gin,” Police in Nyagatare said.
