Nyagatare district has intensified the fight against crimes, especially against consumption and trade of narcotics and illicit brew.
Nyagatare is one of the districts with high cases of drug abuse, especially kanyanga, an illegal gin sneaked in from neighbouring countries through illegal borders.
“We have intensified operations, awareness programmes to sensitize the public on the dangers of drug abuse,” Supt. Christian Safari, the District Police Commander, said.
“We have so far seized kanyanga and other illegal gins in the past few months and apprehended those involved, and operations are still on in partnership with local authorities and the population,” he added.
Early this month, about 700 litres of kanyanga over 200 boxes of chief waragi were destroyed in Nyagatare. They were seized in the last one month.
“We are on alert. We know there are individuals still involved in such criminal acts. We are organizing training of community policing committees and local leaders in crime prevention and we are continuing with awareness programmes in communities. This will help us to further combat crimes in the district,” he explained.
He also appealed to the public to continue the noble cause of fighting and preventing crimes by providing information on people involved in criminal acts, intensify ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ and report families are embroiled in domestic wrangles to prevent them from turning violent.
