A man said to have been trafficking assorted illicit gin into the country was arrested in Mimuri Sector, Nyagatare District on Friday.
Pascal Uzayisenga, 26, was arrested with various brands of illicit gin including Kanyanga and African gin.
He was apprehended as he crossed into Rwanda through a porous border, with the psychotropic substances, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said.
Kanyanga and other assorted gins packed in outlawed polythene bags are classified as narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in Rwanda.
"We had information that Uzayisenga and other people use illegal borders to traffic assorted illicit gin into the country from Uganda," CIP Twizeyimana said.
"A target operation was conducted on July 26, and the suspect was arrested red-handed on the hill of Gakoni in Mimuri Sector with the substances," he added.
He warned that operations are continuous to arrest anyone still engaged in such criminal tendencies.
"There are some individuals known to be engaged in trafficking these psychotropic substances, they are still in the hideout but they will also be arrested. We get this information from the people, who play a great role in identifying and arresting such criminals," he explained.
The first week of the ongoing Police Month focused on countrywide awareness camapign against narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances as well as disposing of the seized drugs.
