Psychotropic substances seized in various joint operations in Nyagatare District were disposed of on Thursday as Police and local leaders engaged the youth on dangers of abusing the drugs.
The substances include about 100 cartons of illicit gin known as Zebra Waragi.
While speaking to students of Rwisirabo Secondary School, who participated in the destruction and awareness against drugs, the Vice Mayor of Nyagatare in charge of Social Affairs, Juliet Murekatete urged them to focus on their education but also to report drug dealers.
“We have drawn concrete measures to prevent drug abuse in the district, however this requires every resident particularly you the young people to take ownership; information is key if we have to combat the vice,” Murekatete told the students.
The District Police Commander of Nyagatare, Senior Supt. Jean Pierre Tebuka commended the residents for their community policing spirit through which illicit drugs are seized and dealers arrested.
Nyagatare is marked as one of the transit routes for drug traffickers.
SSP Tebuka said narcotic drugs is a serious security threat, highlighting assault, theft, defilement and domestic conflicts as some if the results of abusing drugs.
He told the students that all consuming alcohol is also not allowed for anyone below 18 years but added that all drinks packed in banned plastic bags are prohibited in Rwanda and classified as narcotic drugs.
