The Governor of the Eastern Province, Fred Mufurukye has called upon local leaders in Nyagatare District to get closer to the people and work with them on all aspects of security and development.
He made the call this Thursday during the meeting that brought together local leaders and opinion leaders from all the eight sectors of Nyagatare.
The meeting was also attended by the Regional Police Commander-Eastern, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Emmanuel Hatari and the Mayor of Nyagatare, Mushabe Claudian.
Governor Mufurukye reminded the local leaders that the more they get closer and work with the residents the more they will understand issues they face in terms of security and other services they need.
“We have issues related to poor feeding, illicit drugs, school drop-outs, and teenage pregnancies among others; we need to address these obstacles to youth development," Governor Mufurukye said.
He also reminded farmers, religious leaders and the business community in Nyagatare, who also attended the meeting, of their duty to spearhead national programmes meant to improve the wellbeing of the people and mindset change.
ACP Hatari outlined illicit drugs and assault as one of the major crimes in Nyagatare.
He called for ownership and stronger cooperation especially on drug traffickers so that they're arrested.
Illicit drugs worth over Rwf32 million, were seized in Nyagatare between January and March this year.
The RPC also urged local leaders to educate the people especially the youth on dangers of abusing drugs, and their role in policing and fighting lawlessness in general.
