At least 131 members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) in Rwempasha, Katabagemu and Mimuri sectors completed one-day training on crime prevention on January 24, police said.
The training was aimed at strengthening measures against crimes and raise awareness of CPCs on crime prevention.
Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Vincent Gatware, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) in Nyagatare said the population has to contribute for their own security and peace in preventing crimes.
“You know that security is paramount to a country’s development, your participation is highly needed. Your participation should include sharing the information on crimes and collaborating with other security organs to advise masses to desist from any acts of lawlessness,” he said
AIP Gatware told the CPCs that drug abuse and excessive alcohol is among the main cause of several crimes which have impacts on the community.
“Drugs like cannabis and many other illegal brews; besides being prohibited by the law, they contribute in the commission of many other crimes like gender-based violence related crimes, theft and other violence. So, we ask you to redouble your efforts in preventing drug abuse,” he explained.
CPCs were called upon to renew their resolve and further tighten night patrols and give no space to criminals.
On his part, the Executive Secretary of Mimuri Sector, Emmanuel Bandora said that the meeting was meant to ensure that the CPCs review their community policing roles, security challenges that are common in their respective communities and draw a comprehensive strategy on how they will be partnering with police, local leaders and the residents to address them”.
Community policing has been credited for improving safety and security in the country and is among the priorities of a proactive approach by Rwanda National Police. And community policing committees are now operational countrywide.
