Nyagatare: Community policing groups in joint efforts to create crime-free villages

Members of the Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing, Community Policing Committees (CPCs) and local night patrols of Rwimiyaga Sector in Nyagatare District have joined efforts to ensure that villages in their sector are crime-free.

The three community policing groups held a meeting on Wednesday with the Police to discuss on how to make their villages free from any crime.

Athanase Karekezi, a member of CPCs said that with all the community policing groups working as a team, "wrongdoers will hardly find any gap to implement their evil acts."

“We attach much attention to security and being here today as CPCs, community night patrols and youth volunteers means we can achieve a lot if we understand and respond to the identified problem together," Karekezi said.

He added: "When we interact with security organs and local leaders, we get reminded of our responsibilities in security and development matters; security is the basis for economic welfare."

Silva Kubwa, the executive secretary of Rwimiyaga Sector, while addressing participants, urged them to always partner with security agencies to ensure that those suspected of committing crimes to be arrested.

He appealed to them to always lead by example, desist from acts of drunkenness, be people of integrity and patriotic.

On his part, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Jean Claude Kaburabuza, the District Community Liaison Officer called for more cooperation among participants to put much emphasis on fighting illicit drugs.
