Police in Nyabihu District have arrested one Marie-Grace Irakiza for attempting to corrupt law enforcement personnel with a bribe of Rwf40, 000.
According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, the Rwf40, 000 bribe was meant to influence the release of her relatives.
Her relatives; Maniraho Turatsinze and Ibrahim Munyaneza were apprehended on May 28, over assault and battery.
“After the arrest of Maniraho and Munyaneza, Irakiza started calling for negotiations and to offer them bribes so as to release them from custody at Mukamira Police station,” said CIP Karekezi.
“Law enforcement personnel worked together to arrest Irakiza in action giving the bribe."
He warned of the "zero-tolerance policy on corruption or bribery in our country" because of its diverse effects on individuals, service delivery, governance, justice and development of the country.”
“We advise the public to avoid anything that would tempt them into either offering or receiving bribes, and encourage sharing of information on those involved to ensure that they are arrested to face the law.”
According to article 4 of the Law on Fighting Against Corruption, any person who offers, solicits, accepts or receives, by any means, an illegal benefit for himself/herself or another person in order to render or omit a service under his or her mandate, commits an offense.
Upon conviction, the offender is liable to imprisonment for a term of more than five years but not more than seven years, with a fine of three to five times the value of the illegal benefit solicited or received.
