Police in Nyabihu District have arrested a women in possession of close to 3000 pellets of cannabis being transported to Kigali City.
The suspected drug trader was napped during a regular security patrol after police from Mukamira Police station made a snap check-in Nyamugari village.
The Western Region Police Spokesperson Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira said the operation was conducted on January 27, in the Cell Rubaya, Sector Mukamira.
CIP Gasasira said when the law enforcers asked her the contents of her bag; she fumbled with answers, raising suspicion and accosted by officers who asked her for a check in her luggage.
“Police searched her and found the drugs concealed in envelopes, she was immediately detained,” said CIPGasasira.
He said the drugs are believed to have been trafficked from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), through porous border entry points.
The suspects have been handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) for further investigation.
Under article 263 of the new law Nº68/2018 OF 30/08/2018 determining offences and penalties in general, anyone convicted of producing, transforming, transporting, storing, giving to another or selling narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances faces a penalty of imprisonment between seven years and a life sentence, including fines of up to thirty million Rwandan Francs (30,000,000 Frw).
