Northern region residents urged to fight consumption of Kanyanga

Residents of the Northern Province have been called upon to strengthen their efforts in fighting trade and consumption of illicit drugs especially kanyanga and cannabis which are still rampant in the region.

The call follows the arrest a suspected trafficker of Kanyanga, one Paulin Bararayavuga, 29, in Gicumbi district, Gikonko Sector.

He is currently detained at Byumba Police Station.

The Northern region Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Emmanuel Hitayezu asked residents to make it their responsibility to fight such illegal and dangerous substances by reporting those involved.

"These acts destabilise families, your children abandon school, become thieves and the end result is have a wasteful generation of youths," Supt. Hitayezu noted.

He advised those that may still be engaged or planning to engage in this illegal business to stop it and switch to legalized and developmental ventures.

“Dealing and consumption of Kanyanga and other narcotic drugs are a criminal act that is punishable by the Rwandan law,” Superintendent Hitayezu warned.

He appealed to residents particularly taxi motorcycle operators, to play a role in crime prevention campaigns by partnering with security organs through information sharing.
