The Governor of the Northern Province, Jean Marie Vianney Gatabazi and the Regional Police Commander (RPC) Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Eric Mutsinzi, on November 8, visited the youth currently undergoing rehabilitation at Rukomo transit centre and advised them to pay attention to vocational disciplines given to them.
At least 153 youth drug abusers, dealers and those drawn from streets are undergoing the rehabilitation process at the centre. The rehabilitation also includes vocational training and civic education programmes.
“These centres were established by the government to ensure that even the young people who go astray are brought back to the right path but with vocational skills and support youth development,” Governor Gatabazi told the young people.
He urged them to understand why they are at the centre and what it holds for them in terms developing and turning them into skilled labour force.
The Governor told them that abusing drugs is one of the obstacles affecting youth development, and urged them to desist from such acts.
ACP Mutsinzi, on his part, urged them to be partners in policing especially when they are reintegrated back in their communities.
“Majority of you are here because of drugs, when you go back do not attempt to throw away your future again in drugs and other criminal activities,” ACP Mutsinzi advised them.
Various rehab and transit centres were established in different parts of the country as part of the national efforts against drugs.
Such measures also supplement the Rwanda National Police (RNP) operations and awareness narcotic drugs by killing the local market.
