Separate Police operations conducted on November 25 in Burera and Gicumbi districts seized assorted contrabands in different brands and arrested two people in connection with the act.
Police spokesperson for the Northern region, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira said that the seizure and subsequent arrest was part of the usual and continuous operations to break chains of supply.
“Most of these successful operations are facilitated by credible information we get from people, and that's how we got to know that one Veneranda Mbinaruza, a resident of Cyumba sector in Gicumbi was hiding contrabands in her house, where they were recovered before taking her into custody,” IP Gasasira said.
Ten boxes of chief waragi, eight dozens of Kitoko waragi and 87 litres of kanyanga were seized from Mbinaruza's house.
Meanwhile, the drugs seized in Burera including 12 dozens of chief waragi and jerrycans of kanyanga, were being transported on a motorcycle TVS RA 007, which was also impounded.
“The seizure of illicit drugs and arrests have increased because of the enhanced partnership with the people especially those residing on borderlines, who give us information, ” he said.
Burera and Gicumbi are said to be major transit routes in the Northern Province due to their strategic location.
Residents in almost all sectors of the two districts formed anti-drug clubs as part of their effort to supplement police measures against illicit drugs.
