Northern Province commended on crime prevention

The Inspector General of Police Emmanuel K. Gasana has commended local leaders in the Northern Province for their role in addressing security concerns and ensuring security in the region.

The Police Chief was speaking on October 23 in Musanze district during a consultative meeting on good governance month in the Northern Province.

He noted that security has improved in the province but appealed to the leaders to leave no room for crimes like drug abuse, fight genocide ideology and human trafficking among others.

The region was facing an issue of abarembetsi, a racket of criminals especially trafficking drugs, but latest statistics indicate that their activities have reduced by 80 percent following stern measures initiated by police in partnership with local leaders and area residents.

He also dismissed the BBC recent documentary that twisted the facts of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi as false and misleading to both locals and the international community, and aimed at genocide denial.

The IGP also urged them to promote and defend the Rwandan culture and values.

The Minister for Local Government, Francis Kaboneka challenged the local leaders to be agents of change.

“Rwandans needs leaders who are a solution to their needs,” Minister Kaboneka stated.

He said resources will always be scarce but added that local leaders are expected to be "Intore" to leader the population to success.
