Police in Musanze and Kayonza districts arrested eight people suspected of trafficking narcotics.
The suspects were arrested separately, on September 03 during an operations conducted to crackdown drug abuse in the country.
The suspects are currently detained at Muhoza and Rukara Police Stations, in Musanze and Kayonza districts respectively.
During the operation, Police also seized drugs, illicit brew and banned gin; they include 100 liters of illicit brew commonly known as kanyanga, 159 dozens of blue sky, four pellets of cannabis and 35 liters of illicit gin, among others.
The Northern Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police Elvis Munyaneza, warned that drug trafficking and abuse is a serious security threat with gross negative impacts on people’s health.
He blamed occurrence of crimes like, rape and defilement, theft and assault to drug consumption.
“Most people particularly the youth normally commit crimes like theft after consuming drugs like cannabis and kanyanga,” said IP Munyaneza.
He farther urged youth to distance them from the vice and importantly join efforts to fight and prevent it through community policing approaches.
Article 594 of the Rwandan penal code, stipulates that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500,000 to Rwf5 million.
Combating drug abuse remains a Rwanda National Police’s priority.
