Police on December 1, arrested two men in Ngororero District for allegedly counterfeiting and and circulating fake Rwandan francs.
The suspects, Phenias Barebukize, 27, and Silas Nzamuye Bazokoriki, 29, were arrested in Ngoma Cell, Muhanda Sector shortly after it was discovered that the money worth Rwf130, 000, in Rwf5000 denomination they had used to purchase a piece of land, was all fake.
“When the intended victims noticed that they had been offered fake money, the immediately informed police, which immediately pounced on the suspects and arrested them,” the District Commander (DPC), Senior Supt of Police (SSP) Alphonse Zigira, said.
The duo is held at Kabaya Police Station as investigations continue.
SSP Zigira said cases of currency counterfeit are rare in Ngororero, but warned of severe consequences to anyone that will be caught in the act.
he noted that counterfeit money has longstanding consequences to the economy and appealed to residents in the area to desist from such illegal acts and report those involved.
He urged the business community to always verify currency notes thoroughly before conducting transactions in order to avoid falling prey to fraudsters.
